The Pharmaceutical Industry in Ireland
No doubt you’ve heard that Ireland is home to global tech companies like Facebook and Google. But did you know some of the world’s biggest pharmaceutical companies are based here too? You’ve only got to peek inside your medicine cupboard to see that many products are made in Ireland. In fact, we’re the eighth largest producer of pharmaceuticals in the world.
It’s an industry with excellent room for career advancement. A recent CPL study listed pharma as one of the top five growth industries in Ireland in 2018. The study noted that there have been salary increases in the industry due to a combination of steep competition, high demand and new start-ups. Getting Started in the Industry
Even if you haven’t got scientific experience or a background in the industry, you can still get a foot in the door. We recently launched a level 6 Higher Certificate in Process Technologies that’s suitable for people who have a leaving cert or trade qualification. The course is part-time and delivered by industry experts. It will help build skills suited to the sector, enabling you to move into roles like Production Technician or Operator, Maintenance Technician, Manufacturing Supervisor or Team Leader, Process Improvement Specialist, Quality Assurance or Quality Control, Supply Chain Planner, Regulatory Compliance and Health & Safety Officer. Once you’ve completed this course, you’ll also have the qualification you need to move on to one of our more advanced courses at a time that suits you.
Upskilling
The skills required to enter the pharma industry are particular but attainable. If you have a general science or engineering degree, for example, you can upskill relativity quickly with one of our specialised Master’s programs. These are highly desired qualifications tailored to the genuine needs of the industry, opening the door to more senior roles like executive, manager or director. Changing career is much easier when you have expert guidance, and we provide you with extensive career coaching, CV workshops and interview preparation. Coupled with industry-specific expert training, this has given us an enviable success rate, with 70% of students further advancing their careers after completing an Innopharma course.
